A self-help association was founded in East H\u00fanavatns\u00fdsla on April 2, 1981. The association's first chairman was Gu\u00f0mundur Klemensson. The founding meeting was held following an informational meeting organized by a working committee on behalf of J.C. H\u00fanabygg\u00f0 and the Association of East H\u00fanvetnsk Women (SAHK). \u00d3l\u00f6f R\u00edkar\u00f0sd\u00f3ttir attended the founding meeting and spoke about the work of Sj\u00e1lfsbj\u00f6rg. At a follow-up founding meeting on May 25 of the same year, the newly established association received generous donations.

In 1982, the association gave the H\u00e9ra\u00f0sh\u00e6li\u00f0 in Bl\u00f6ndu\u00f3s a training bench and a chair. The arrangement and facilities for physical therapy were then under discussion. The association has continued to support the region's healthcare institution and donated two wheelchairs to the H\u00e9ra\u00f0ssj\u00fakrah\u00fasi\u00f0 \u00e1 Bl\u00f6ndu\u00f3si in 2000 in memory of Gu\u00f0mundur Klemensson, who had passed away. More donations have been given to the hospital in recent years.

In the fall of 1989, J\u00f3hann P\u00e9tur Sveinsson and others traveled in electric wheelchairs from Akureyri to Reykjav\u00edk, stopping in Bl\u00f6ndu\u00f3s where they were welcomed with a coffee party.

In February 2000, assistance was requested from Sj\u00e1lfsbj\u00f6rg, the National Federation of the Disabled, to help pressure for improved accessibility to the East H\u00fanavatn County courthouse. The request came from the then-sheriff, Kjartan Thorkelsson, and the timing of the request was perhaps no coincidence, as Arn\u00f3r P\u00e9tursson, chairman of Sj\u00e1lfsbj\u00f6rg, and Sigur\u00f0ur Einarsson, executive director, were visiting Bl\u00f6ndu\u00f3s at the time. Representing Sj\u00e1lfsbj\u00f6rg in East H\u00fanavatn County was Gu\u00f0finna Einarsd\u00f3ttir, and the sheriff who succeeded Kjartan, along with others, were present. This is just one of several examples of an initiative in fisheries matters in East H\u00fanavatnss\u00fdsla, as fisheries issues have often been the association's main cause.

Ingunn Mar\u00eda Bj\u00f6rnsd\u00f3ttir was the chairperson of Sj\u00e1lfsbj\u00f6rg, East H\u00fanavatnss\u00fdsla during Sj\u00e1lfsbj\u00f6rg lsf.'s 50th anniversary year (2009), as well as during the national federation's 60th anniversary year in 2019.<\/p><\/div>
