Later that same year, Self-Help Societies were founded in Reykjav\u00edk, \u00cdsafj\u00f6r\u00f0ur, Akureyri, and \u00c1rness\u00fdsla.<\/p><p data-block-key=\"ywscu\">Five Self-Help Societies then founded a national federation on June 4, 1959, in Reykjavik and called it\u00a0<b>Self-Help, National Federation of the Disabled<\/b>\u00a0(The name was changed in 2016 to Sj\u00e1lfsbj\u00f6rg National Federation of the Disabled). Its first chairman was Emil Andersen, and he served as chairman for one year.<\/p><p data-block-key=\"p362x\">Later in 1959, Self-Help Societies were founded in Bolungarv\u00edk and in the Westman Islands. In 1960, a Self-Help Society was founded in H\u00fasav\u00edk, in 1961 in the South-West, and in 1962 in Sau\u00f0\u00e1rkr\u00f3kur.<\/p><p data-block-key=\"14ik5\">First\u00a0<b>National Congress of Sj\u00e1lfsbj\u00f6rg<\/b>\u00a0was held in Akureyri in 1960 in the association&#x27;s new own facility, Bjarg. A resolution was adopted that the Heritage Fund would henceforth support the construction of work and community centers for the disabled through loan services. The construction of the Sj\u00e1lfsbj\u00f6rg House at H\u00e1t\u00fan 12, Reykjav\u00edk, was later partially financed with a contribution from the Heritage Fund. Theod\u00f3r A. J\u00f3nsson was elected the second chairman of the national federation in 1960 and served as chairman for 28 years.<\/p><p data-block-key=\"1gqp2\"><b>Disabled People&#x27;s Association of Iceland<\/b>\u00a0\u00d6B\u00cd was founded in 1961 at the initiative of \u00d3l\u00f6f R\u00edkhar\u00f0sd\u00f3ttir, secretary of Sj\u00e1lfsbj\u00f6rg lsf. The founding members, in addition to Sj\u00e1lfsbj\u00f6rg, the National Federation of the Disabled, were the Blindraf\u00e9lagi\u00f0, the Blindravinaf\u00e9lag \u00cdslands, S\u00cdBS, the Styrktarf\u00e9lag lama\u00f0ra og fatla\u00f0ra, and the Styrktarf\u00e9lag vangefinna. Since then, Sj\u00e1lfsbj\u00f6rg has been actively involved in the activities of \u00d6B\u00cd and has had board members there almost continuously. Two chairpersons of \u00d6B\u00cd have been representatives of Sj\u00e1lfsbj\u00f6rg. The former, \u00d3l\u00f6f R\u00edkar\u00f0sd\u00f3ttir, was the first representative of Sj\u00e1lfsbj\u00f6rg to be elected president of \u00d6B\u00cd (1994-1998), and \u00deur\u00ed\u00f0ur Harpa Sigur\u00f0ard\u00f3ttir was then elected president of \u00d6B\u00cd in 2017 (she was then the vice president of Sj\u00e1lfsbj\u00f6rg). Also of note, Gudmundur Magn\u00fasson \u2013 an active member of Sj\u00e1lfsbj\u00f6rg for many years \u2013 was elected chairman of \u00d6B\u00cd from 2009 to 2013, then as a representative of the SEM association. In 2022, the organization received a new logo and its name was changed to\u00a0<b>\u00d6B\u00cd \u2013 Rights Association<\/b>. In 2023, Alma \u00ddr Ing\u00f3lfsd\u00f3ttir was elected chairperson, representing Sj\u00e1lfsbj\u00f6rg.<\/p><p data-block-key=\"jeeqc\">Sj\u00e1lfsbj\u00f6rg, the National Federation of the Disabled, becomes a full member of the Nordic Cooperation of the Disabled.,\u00a0<b>Nordic Disability Federation<\/b>\u00a0(NHF) in 1963 and has been active there ever since. That year, the national association&#x27;s 5th annual congress was held, and on that occasion, the member associations gave the national association a carved ivory gavel by the sculptor R\u00edkar\u00f0 J\u00f3nsson. The artist&#x27;s design for the organization&#x27;s emblem was carved into it, along with a motto that served as his encouragement to Self-Help Societies: &quot;,<b><i>Always sail upwind, eye the summit, climb the highest peak.<\/i><\/b>\u201d.<\/p><p data-block-key=\"05fes\">Construction begins on the building\u00a0<b>The Self-Rescue House<\/b>\u00a0in 1966 after the City of Reykjavik had allocated the organization the lot at H\u00e1t\u00fan 12. The construction of the first phase of the building was completed in 1968. In 1973, the first residents moved into the building. The building was then further expanded. The swimming pool wing was opened in 1981, and a new two-story building was constructed at the east end of the property. It was opened in 1988 and initially housed the Aid Equipment Bank.<\/p><p data-block-key=\"wq0i6\"><b>The Self-Help Home (SBH)<\/b>\u00a0It began operations as soon as the Self-Help House was ready, in 1973. Its operations have since grown and thrived, undergoing several changes over the years. It was first named the Self-Help Work and Residence Home, but in 1995 the name was changed to the Self-Help Home. Reference is made to a special\u00a0<b>chapter<\/b>\u00a0which tells more about the history of SBH.<\/p><p data-block-key=\"hzgsj\">Self-help societies were founded in Stykkish\u00f3lmur and Akranes in 1970, and in Neskaupsta\u00f0ur in 1974.<\/p><p data-block-key=\"hitl5\"><b>Sports Association for the Disabled in Reykjavik<\/b>\u00a0(\u00cdFR) was founded in 1974 at the initiative of Sj\u00e1lfsbj\u00f6rg lsf. and the IOC, and in 1992 the club opened a new sports hall that was built on the northern part of the lot at H\u00e1t\u00fan 10-12. The parcel of land that was jointly owned by \u00d6B\u00cd and Sj\u00e1lfsbj\u00f6rg was assigned the address H\u00e1t\u00fan 14. Sj\u00e1lfsbj\u00f6rg and \u00cdFR have had a good partnership ever since.<\/p><p data-block-key=\"z1j1e\"><b>The Assistive Technology Bank<\/b>\u00a0was founded by Sj\u00e1lfsbj\u00f6rg lsf. and the Icelandic Red Cross in 1975. The company was first housed at N\u00f3at\u00fan 21 in Reykjav\u00edk, but later moved into its own facility at H\u00e1t\u00fan 12 (the lower level of a newly built house on the easternmost part of the lot). In 1995, the Assistive Device Bank was sold to \u00d6ssur hf. when the state established an assistive device service as part of the national health insurance program.<\/p><p data-block-key=\"k5rzi\">Self-rescue organized a,<b>&quot;Equal Rights March&quot; of the disabled<\/b>\u00a0In 1978, for the Year of the Disabled, about 10,000 people participated in a march and rally to emphasize the issues and rights of people with disabilities.<\/p><p data-block-key=\"ovlsp\">A Self-Help Society was founded in East H\u00fanavatn County in 1981, in 1984 in H\u00f6fn in Hornafj\u00f6r\u00f0ur, and the sixteenth Self-Help Society was founded in Vopnafj\u00f6r\u00f0ur in 1991.<\/p><p data-block-key=\"3swsv\">,,<b>Well-wishers<\/b>\u201dThe Self-Help Supporters were established in 1993 following a special fundraising campaign. These are numerous individuals from across the country who agree to contribute a fixed amount to support the organization, either once or multiple times a year, thereby becoming special supporters of the organization. To refresh the list, another campaign was then launched in 2016 to increase the number of Friends and strengthen the association&#x27;s membership, which was successful.<\/p><p data-block-key=\"mm4rl\"><b>Association of Stroke Survivors<\/b>\u00a0(later\u00a0<b>Brain injury<\/b>) became a member of Sj\u00e1lfsbj\u00f6rg lsf. in 1996. The associations within the national federation had then become 17.
