Recently, Sj\u00e1lfsbj\u00f6rg released a short educational video about the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD). In the video, Margr\u00e9t, a former chairperson, reviews the purpose of the convention and specifically addresses articles 9, 19, and 20, which concern accessibility, independent living, and mobility, explaining what they actually mean. Finally, a brief overview is given of what the ratification of the treaty means, as well as the role civil society organizations will play if the ratification is approved by the Althingi.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
It is extremely important that we know and understand our rights. Rights are systemic, and without knowledge of them, it can be difficult to fight for them against the system. There is a risk that we, as disabled people, will accept less service, poor accessibility, or worse treatment than we are entitled to.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
We all have the right to live a dignified life, and the articles of the SRFF affirm this right for people with disabilities. To date, people with disabilities have not been successful in enjoying full rights on an equal basis with others, as governments and courts do not fully respect the SRFF. With its enactment, the rights of people with disabilities would be better guaranteed on an equal basis with others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
