Self-Rescue in Húsavík – The Story

In 1960, a Self-Help Society was founded in Húsavík. The first president of the society was Jón Þór Buch. The society acquired a fine bingo machine in 1961, as bingo was a very popular fundraising method for most of the societies.

In 1968, the association purchased the Snæland house at 12 Aragata, as a shortage of space had hampered its operations until that time.

Garðshorn in Húsavík is a rehabilitation and outdoor recreation area behind the hospital and nursing home for the elderly in Húsavík, which was dedicated on September 20, 2003, and Sjálfsbjörg was among those who helped create the area. A great job has been done there, and in many ways, an unusual one. The description of the area states, among other things:

,In Garðshorni, a variety of training is planned, including gait training, wheelchair training, as well as joint-mobilizing and strengthening exercises on equipment that will be located in a special training area designed by physical and occupational therapists. It's so good to play and do sports at any age, to find the child within. Garðshorni has an 18-hole putting course, Ingimarsvöllur. It's easy to play boccia on the large plaza by the ramp. You can let your creativity run wild and set up exhibitions both outdoors and indoors. A fountain delights the eye, and stairs and a large wooden deck ensure that everyone can find a workout option that suits them…"”

On Sjálfsbjörg Húsavík's 50th anniversary in 2009 and its 60th anniversary in 2019, María Óskarsdóttir served as the association's president.
