In 1974, a Self-Help Association was founded in Neskaupstaður. The association has undertaken various projects, particularly social events, social gatherings, and various courses, and has donated generously to the rehabilitation center in Neskaupstaður.

In 1994, various representatives of Sjálfsbjörg visited the association to mark the opening in May of the exhibition "A Society Without Barriers." Among those who came to Neskaupstaður for this occasion was Jóhann Pétur Sveinsson, former chairman of Sjálfsbjörg.

The chairperson of Sjálfsbjörg in Fjarðabyggð during Sjálfsbjörg LSH's 50th anniversary year in 2009 was Unnur Jónsdóttir, and during the national association's 75th anniversary year in 2019, Hafdís Eyland Gísladóttir was the chairperson of the association.
