The Sixteenth Self-Help Society was founded in Vopnafjörður in 1991. There were 27 founding members.
Accessibility issues have long been a concern for the association. We have advocated for improved facilities at the parking lot and swimming pool and worked to have ramps installed. Everything has been moving in the right direction. In 2003, Self-Help Days were held in Vopnafjörður, and the activities of Sjálfsbjörg were presented to the people of Vopnafjörður, both disabled and non-disabled. Accessibility issues were of particular concern to the locals due to renovations being made at Kaupvangur.
The chairman of Sjálfsbjörg in Vopnafjörður during Sjálfsbjörg LSH's 50th anniversary year (2009) was Gunnar Smári Guðmundsson, while Marie T. Robin was the chairman during the national association's 60th anniversary year in 2019.
