In the law on patient rights (see Article 5) Since 1997, it has been stipulated that a patient who is medically insured in Iceland but does not speak Icelandic or uses sign language is entitled to interpreter services. Healthcare personnel are required to ensure that the patient receives these services.

The online interpreting service Language Line provides interpreting services 24 hours a day. Both sign language and spoken interpreting are available by phone or video call. This can be very beneficial for individuals with mobility impairments, as well as for those who use alternative communication methods.
