Thanks, and what's next?

Accessibility Awareness

At the opening of the Althingi yesterday, a group of Accessibility Trolls showed up on Austurvöllur with an awareness campaign titled "Thanks, and What Now?" The purpose was to thank the Parliament for the ratification of the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities and to remind them that such legislation comes with the great responsibility of implementing the convention's articles into Icelandic law. At the same time, we wanted to encourage members of parliament to work with us to make society accessible to everyone, which includes access to housing, education, the healthcare system, assistive devices, employment, travel, and transportation. Just access to life, as most others have and take for granted. The weather was perfect, and the awareness campaign received the undivided attention of the parliament and the president, as well as the media outlets Vísir and RÚV, which interviewed the group. The Stroll is organized by: The CP Association, The Arthritis Association of Iceland, MND in Iceland, Multiple Sclerosis Society of Iceland, NPA Center, SEM Association of Rehabilitated Spinal Cord Injured and Sjálfsbjörg lsh. The accompanying photos were taken by photographer Steina Matt for Sjálfsbjörg lsh.
